The best backlink tools for most teams are Seowly for hands-off outreach, Ahrefs for link research, and Pitchbox for large outreach teams.
A backlink platform can mean four different things: research, outreach, monitoring or digital PR. Most bad purchases come from buying one kind and expecting another.
This guide compares nine tools across those four jobs. We checked prices on each vendor's own site on November 1, 2026. Seowly is our product and it sits first, because outreach is where we think most teams get stuck. We state its limits below.
The 9 best backlink tools: TL;DR
Ranked by the job each one does best:
- Seowly: best for hands-off outreach, at $39 a month for up to 5 brands
- Ahrefs: best for link research, from $29 a month
- Semrush: best all-in-one suite, from $139 a month
- Majestic: best dedicated link index, from $49.99 a month
- Pitchbox: best for large outreach teams, from $300 a month
- MentionAgent: an AI agent on managed sending, from $99 a month
- Hunter: best for finding contacts, from $49 a month
- Linkody: best for backlink monitoring, from $14.90 a month
- Featured: best for digital PR, with a free plan
What is a backlink platform?
A backlink platform is software that helps you find, earn, track or analyze links from other websites to yours. The term covers research databases, outreach tools, monitoring tools and PR marketplaces, and each of those solves a different problem.
It helps to separate the job from the tool. Research tells you which links are possible, and outreach is how you earn them. Monitoring tells you whether you kept them. Ask which of those jobs is stopping you today, and the shortlist gets short.
Link marketplaces also call themselves platforms. We left them out, because buying links for ranking purposes breaks Google's spam policies.
How do the best backlink tools compare?
Seowly leads on running outreach, Ahrefs on research depth and Linkody on low-cost monitoring. The table uses the lowest self-serve plan, billed monthly unless noted.
| Tool | Main job | Entry price | Free option |

1. Seowly: best for hands-off outreach
Seowly is the best choice if your problem is doing the outreach, because it runs that work for you. It picks the sites worth contacting, writes the pitch, sends it from your own mailbox, follows up and answers ordinary replies when you switch that on.
It costs $39 a month, or $390 a year, for up to 5 brands. Before you pay, a free report shows real opportunities for your site with a contact for each one. No card is needed.
The limits are deliberate:
- It needs your own mailbox. Seowly reads the mailbox over IMAP on your own domain. Gmail and Microsoft mailboxes are not supported.
- Volume is capped. Sends stop at 200 per site and 800 per account a month, so it does not suit high-volume link buyers.
- Money stays with you. It never agrees to pay, at any amount. A price always comes to you as a deal to approve.
- Autopilot skips some markets. It does not contact Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
- It is not a research suite. Keep Ahrefs or Semrush for analysis.
For a real example of the outreach it is built on, see our Love Tales case study. Our founder co-founded that site, and we say so on the page.
2. Ahrefs: best for backlink research
Ahrefs is the best tool for backlink research because of the depth of its link data. Its data page lists 35 trillion external backlinks in its history, and it reports crawling 5 million pages every minute.
Ahrefs pricing runs from Starter at $29 a month to Lite at $129, Standard at $249 and Advanced at $449. Ahrefs Free gives you Site Audit and Site Explorer on sites you have verified, showing your top 1,000 backlinks.
Competitor analysis needs a paid plan. It shows you who links to rivals, and the outreach that follows is your job.
3. Semrush: best all-in-one suite
Semrush is the best pick if backlinks are one of many jobs you run in a single login. Its Backlink Analytics claims more than 43 trillion backlinks and 390 million referring domains.
The SEO plan costs $139 a month, or $117.33 billed annually, and the free account allows 10 reports a day. If you are weighing the cost, our guide to Semrush alternatives compares seven other tools.
You may be paying for several toolkits you never open, so check what you actually use before committing.
4. Majestic: best dedicated link index
Majestic is the best choice if you want link data without a full SEO suite. Its Fresh Index covers 550.8 billion URLs found in the last 120 days. Its Historic Index covers 21.7 trillion URLs back to 2006, though that index has been frozen since May 2024.
Lite costs $49.99 a month, or $41.67 billed annually. Pro costs $99.99, and the Historic Index needs Pro or API access. Prices exclude VAT.
Majestic is built around link data, so pair it with something else for keyword research and audits.
5. Pitchbox: best for large outreach teams
Pitchbox is the best fit for agencies and in-house teams running high-volume outreach with several people. It combines prospecting, contact management and outreach workflows in one place.
Pitchbox pricing starts at $300 a month, or $210 billed annually, for 2 users and 2,000 emails a month. Every plan carries a one-year commitment, and a $2,000 implementation fee applies unless you prepay annually.
That is a real commitment. It makes sense when you have staff running outreach all day, and little sense when you are looking to remove that work.
Seowly finds who links to your competitors, writes the pitch, and sends it from your own inbox.
6. MentionAgent: an AI agent on managed sending
MentionAgent is the closest direct alternative to Seowly, so it belongs on this list. It is an AI agent for prospecting, pitching and follow-ups, and it also tracks mentions in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
Its site lists $99 a month for 1 site, 1 inbox and 1,200 emails a month, with higher tiers priced by inbox count. There are 50 free credits to start and a 14-day refund window.
The main difference from Seowly is the mailbox and the price. Compare both, along with who controls your sending reputation, before you choose.
7. Hunter: best for finding contacts
Hunter is the best choice when you already have your prospect list and need the right email address. It combines an email finder, a verifier and basic sequences.
Hunter's free plan includes 50 credits a month. Starter costs $49 a month, or $34 billed annually, with 2,000 credits.
It solves one step of the process. You still have to choose targets, write pitches and manage replies, so it works best alongside a research tool.
8. Linkody: best for backlink monitoring
Linkody is the best low-cost option for checking whether the links you earned stay live. It tracks your backlinks and sends alerts when something changes.
Linkody's Webmaster plan costs $14.90 a month, or $11.20 billed annually, for 2 sites and 500 links. The top Agency XL plan costs $153.90. There is a 30-day trial with no card.
Monitoring finds problems, and it does not fix them. You will still have to contact the site owner if a link disappears.
9. Featured: best for digital PR links
Featured is the best option for earning links through journalist requests. It bought HARO from Cision in April 2025, so anyone who wrote HARO off after Connectively closed should look again.
Featured's pricing includes a free plan. Lite costs $39 a month, or $29 billed annually, and Pro costs $99, or $79 billed annually. Qwoted is an alternative, with Pro at $149.99 a month, and Source of Sources is a free email list.
Digital PR takes quick, expert answers, and most pitches go unused. Budget for steady effort over several months.
How do you choose the right backlink tool?
Choose by the step where your link building stalls today. Most teams need a research source and a way to run outreach, and they rarely need more than that.
- Name your bottleneck. Is it finding targets, finding contacts, sending pitches or tracking results?
- Check what you already own. Ahrefs or Semrush may already cover research.
- Count your sites. Per-site pricing adds up fast for agencies.
- Price the time. A cheap tool that needs ten hours a week is not cheap.
- Check the mailbox. Find out whose domain and sending reputation are at risk.
- Test on one site. Run a real campaign before you commit to a year.
What mistakes should you avoid when buying backlink tools?
The biggest mistake is buying research when your real problem is execution. A larger database gives you a longer list, and a longer list does not send a single email.
- Buying several overlapping suites. Pick one source of link data and stick with it.
- Comparing index sizes across vendors. Each counts differently, so test on a site you know.
- Chasing authority scores alone. A relevant site with modest metrics often beats an unrelated strong one.
- Sending from your main domain. Outreach belongs on its own domain, away from your primary mailbox.
- Treating marketplaces as tools. Paying for placement carries policy risk that research tools do not.
- Skipping the follow-up. People miss emails, so one polite follow-up belongs in every outreach process.
How many backlinks should these tools help you build?
The right number depends on your keywords, and you can measure it from the live results. Our guide on how many backlinks you need to rank shows the method and gives 2026 benchmarks by industry. Our directory submission service covers the foundation links worth earning first.
The bottom line on the best backlink tools
The best backlink tool is the one that removes your bottleneck. Use Ahrefs or Semrush to see what is possible, Hunter or Linkody for single jobs, and Pitchbox if you have a team to run it. If nobody on your team has time for outreach, start with Seowly's free opportunity report and see what it would send.
